ILC Secretary General Hamza Öksüz Participates in OATUU Meeting
The meeting was also attended by OATUU President Francis Atwoli and OATUU Secretary-General Arezki Mezhoud. Speaking at the meeting, Öksüz emphasized that workers are among those who pay the heaviest price for conflicts, wars, and crises across the world.
Öksüz stated that in the aftermath of wars and crises, workers’ rights are often among the first targets, leading to the erosion of acquired rights and generating severe social costs. He underlined that a strong, determined, and collective struggle is essential to protect and advance labour rights.
He also noted that the meanings of universal values and concepts are being deliberately weakened, while tendencies aimed at undermining international institutions are gaining ground in global politics. Öksüz stressed that many institutions serving peace, stability, and international cooperation, particularly the United Nations, are facing increasing pressure.
Referring to the International Labour Organization as one of the most important international institutions for the world of work, Öksüz stated that the ILO has also been affected by these developments. He called on all workers, labour organizations, and trade unions to defend the ILO, as well as the international labour standards and achievements it has established over the years.
Öksüz concluded his remarks by emphasizing that protecting workers’ rights and strengthening social justice at the global level can only be achieved through international solidarity and joint struggle.
Thanking OATUU for its invitation, Öksüz expressed his appreciation for the opportunity to participate in the meeting and conveyed his wishes for the continued unity, solidarity, and strong cooperation among trade union organizations.
