The Platform Economy Convention is a Critical Step for Labour Rights
As the first global labour standard for platform workers, the Convention affirms that fundamental rights at work also apply to the platform economy. It safeguards freedom of association and collective bargaining, while providing protection against misclassification, unfair deactivation, and arbitrary practices related to algorithmic management.
The Convention also introduces important provisions on timely remuneration not below the minimum wage, access to social protection, protection of workers’ personal data, occupational safety and health, and the right of platform workers to remove themselves from work in cases of serious risk without fear of retaliation. It further strengthens protection against violence and harassment in platform work.
The ILC will continue its efforts to protect labour in the digital age and to ensure that everyone working in the platform economy is visible, protected, and entitled to fundamental rights.
