ILC Supports the International Court of Justice’s Decision on the Right to Strike
This decision, dated 21 May 2026, is of historic importance for international labour law and trade union rights. By clearly affirming that the right to strike is an integral element of freedom of association, the Court has provided a strong legal basis for workers’ collective struggle to defend their rights and interests.
The right to strike is one of the most fundamental instruments through which workers defend their demands for fair wages, decent working conditions, safe workplaces, and social justice. Protecting this right is of great importance not only for workers, but also for democratic society, social dialogue, and industrial peace.
As the ILC, we call on all governments and relevant stakeholders to guarantee freedom of association, collective bargaining rights, and the right to strike in line with international labour standards.
Together with its affiliated confederations across different regions of the world, the International Labour Confederation will continue to resolutely defend the dignity of labour, freedom of association, and social justice.
