Official Visit of the ILC Delegation to Iraq
During the meeting, the parties discussed strengthening international cooperation, expanding joint capacity-building programs, and prioritizing ILC’s activity planning.
Denbous emphasized the importance of the ILC’s role, stating:
“For the Iraqi labor movement, the ILC is highly significant and valuable in promoting international solidarity, sharing experiences at regional and global levels, and organizing international workshops.”
President Yalçın and Secretary General Öksüz underlined that:
“The fundamental mission of trade unions is not only to defend rights but also to build common sense and solidarity. Strengthening the trade union structure in Iraq will also bring new momentum to the regional labor movement.”
Meeting with the Minister of Labour
The delegation later met with Iraq’s Minister of Labour. The Minister highlighted the importance of relations between the two countries and provided information about the ongoing legislative reforms in the field of trade union organization:
“We are currently making major amendments to the trade union organization law. By drawing on international trade union experiences, we aim to establish a more inclusive structure.”
Yalçın and Öksüz shared insights from Turkey’s and international trade union platforms, noting that these experiences would be further developed through regional and global initiatives.
Visit to the Teachers’ Union
As part of the visit, the delegation also met with Uday Al-Isawi, President of the Iraqi Teachers’ Union, and members of the executive board. The meeting focused on recent developments in the education sector of both countries.
Yalçın remarked:
“Although the challenges faced in the field of education differ, the social role of teachers is universal. Cooperation among teachers’ unions is of strategic importance for our shared future.”
President Al-Isawi expressed his satisfaction with the visit and emphasized the need to strengthen not only bilateral cooperation but also regional solidarity and joint initiatives.
Courtesy Visit to Ambassador İnan
The ILC delegation also visited Anıl Bora İnan, Ambassador of the Republic of Türkiye to Baghdad, to brief him on their international trade union efforts and meetings in Iraq.
Ambassador İnan stated:
“The active role of Türkiye’s trade union movement in the region is important not only for the protection of workers’ rights but also for regional peace and stability.”
Final Visit to the Maarif School
In the final leg of the visit, the delegation visited Mansur Maarif School in Baghdad, where they met with teachers and administrators.
Serving around 900 students, the school provided information about its educational process and teachers’ working conditions. The delegation had the opportunity to observe educational activities in the region firsthand.
